Soft Pretzel Bites

If there is a soft pretzel and cheese on a menu anywhere, my husband can hardly resist…..he has to order it.  I can usually take it or leave it, but a few weeks ago I decided to give a popular kitchen hack a test….I made soft pretzel bites from some frozen bread dough.  It worked great….they were really easy and so delicious!  We served them with melted cheese sauce and they disappeared as fast as I was pulling them out of the oven!  My kids and husband all approved!

Frozen bread dough, thawed (I used 3 loaves to make 8 large portions)

1 large egg, beaten with 2 tablespoons water

Coarse salt for sprinkling over pretzels (you could use cinnamon sugar if you wanted a sweet pretzel instead)

16 cups water

3/4 cup baking soda

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Bring water to a gentle boil and reduce heat just until it almost goes back to a simmer.  Divide each frozen loaf into 4 pieces and roll each piece into a rope.  Cut each rope into 8 bite-sized pieces.  (keep in mind these will expand when they are boiled.)  Gently drop the pretzel bites in the simmering water 15-20 pieces at a time.  Boil for 30 seconds.  Drain them on paper towels and place them on a parchment lined baking sheet.  Brush the dough bites with egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.  Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.  Let cool slightly and serve with warm cheese sauce.
