The other night, I decided to try something new today and take one of our favorite sandwiches and turn it into a hotdish. I wish it was really something that was planned to be like that, but it’s more like I was trying to make space in my freezer and pantry and happened to have all of the ingredients sitting there waiting to be used! Ha!
However this recipe came about, it turned out delicious and was familiar enough to my entire family that they all dove in without hesitation! I will admit, the photos might not make this hotdish look very pretty, but it was loaded with flavor and warm cheesy goodness.
Meatball Sub Hotdish
1 loaf of French or Italian bread but into 1-inch slices. (I used one of those take and bake baguettes)
8 ounces cream cheese
1/2 cup mayonnaise (full fat)
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper
30 – 5/8 ounce meatballs. (might use more if your pan is larger…I used the brand from Sam’s Club)
1 – 28 ounces jar spaghetti sauce
1/2 cup water
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375.
In a small bowl combine cream cheese, mayonnaise, black pepper, and garlic powder. Stir together until evenly combined. Next, lay bread slices into the bottom of a large prepared casserole dish or a 9×13 pan. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the top of each slice. Top with meatballs.
In another small bowl, combine spaghetti sauce and water. Pour over the top of the meatballs and bread. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top and bake, uncovered, for 45-minutes or until sauce is bubbling and cheese has started to turn golden brown.
