I am really getting into the Halloween spirit now and have been making a few extra afterschool treats for the kids! I just love this time of year!
To make the black velvet cake, I start with a devils food or chocolate cake mix. In place of the water in the mix, I use buttermilk and black food coloring.
To frost the cupcakes to look a mummy, you will need white buttercream, a small amount of green buttercream for attaching the eyes, and candy eyes. I have made these with both store bought and homemade buttercream and both will work great! The candy eyes can be found in most cake decorating sections of craft stores. I have seen them in a few grocery stores, but I can’t promise that you will find them there. For piping, you can either use a metal “basketweave” tip or you can even find a plastic version of that tip in a cake decorating tip set. If you don’t have an actual piping bag, just use a resealable plastic bag and snip the corner to fit your decorating tip.
